Advice on taking portrait for social media avatar
- Try to fill the frame – Remember the avatar will most likely be displayed very small, especially on Twitter where it is very hard to see details.
- Use a neutral, out of focus or high contrast background.
- Use light to your advantage by standing next to a window
- Try different angles and expressions.
- Keep it simple, don’t try to include to much in the frame

Bill Nighy at the Cambridge Union Society
I was asked recently by BAFTA to photograph an event with the actor Bill Nighy ‘A Life in Pictures with Bill Nighy’ held at the Cambridge Union Society. The event was a Q&A with the journalist Miranda Sawyer. The brief was to photograph without flash the Q & A on stage and the audience asking questions. Bill has acted in many great roles in such films as ‘Love Actually, Pirates of the Caribbean’ I really enjoyed listening to his humble approach to acting and career. Low light capability of the Nikon D3s came into its own. Technical: Nikon D3s / ISO 6400 / 80-200mm lens. 200th/s f/4

Iphone App – Depth of Field Calculator
I have for some time missed the depth of field scale provided on Nikon Manuel focus Lenses. After moving from manuel to Auto focus cameras in 2000. All the autofocus lenses I purchased to replace the old manuel focus lenses all lacked the Dof scale. Although I could preview Dof this was still not adequte as the tendancy is always to use a smaller aperture than absolutly neccesary. Resulting in compromising quality due to excessive diffraction.
The guess work has been taken away by the introduction of stand alone DoF calculators from the likes of Expodisc, but it is now possible to get smart phones Apps at a fraction of the price which will make the calculation for you based on many different focal length and Film/Sensor sizes and even allow you to input your prefrence for the size of Circles of Confusion.
One app which stood out for me is Phocus for the iphone. The app has a clear interface and also provides quick adjustment of preferences and parameters.
