Corporate London photographer Alex Orrow’s recent project shooting environmental portraits for the press and PR of Antoine Baschiera founder and CEO of Early Metrics.
Early Metrics are a unique ratings agency of start ups and SME’s measuring the developmental potential of start ups and SME’s. All the portrait photographs were taken at Early Metrics London office and on the street using the surrounding city buildings. All the setups were with a single light source, either bounced into a white diffused brolly or a large softbox using the Profoto B1. The aim of the project was to produce a suite of images that could be used for editorial purposes across many different publications and so shooting a variety of imagery was a key part of he brief.
Colour grading and toning provides a look similar to the many social media images found on instagram and elsewhere. This is not the same as applying a filter as you would in Instagram but a process that can be tailored to your specification and unique to a particular image or set of images. A few example options to colour grade and stylise images the non graded image is top left.
Examples of natural light (or ‘available daylight’ a more accurate description) corporate staff portraits and portraits for private clients in London and locally within Surrey. Shooting with only the available light can be difficult to master. There are many considerations to account for such as time of day, light direction, reflected colours, background, choice of lens, iso and shutter speed /aperture.
The beauty of working with only the available light without adding supplementary lighting, is the ability to setup quickly with minimal and lightweight equipment which is always good if you have to haul gear up stairs or a long way from a parked car. More importantly it allows you to focus on the subject, is less distracting and intimidating for the subject and is very flattering if the ratio of shadow to highlight is balanced well.
This is a recent cover I shot for for the latest Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust nursing recruitment brochure. Portrait was taken in the anaesthetic room of one Harefield Hospital’s operating theatres. This is one of a series of environmental portrait photographs taken of the super happy and friendly theatre nurse Nerea.
