Recent commission for HCA Healthcare. Photograph taken of London Bridge Hospital riverside facade with River Thames at high tide, dusk lighting, clear skies and a deadline within 7 days. This was probably a once a month occurrence and it was pure luck and constant weather watching which enabled all the elements to come together as well they did. After checking with the Port of London Authority for tide times at the correct location, I could see which dates would have high tide during the twilight golden hour. I just needed good weather. This was taken on the only day of good of weather during the only window of opportunity I had to complete the work on time and within the deadline date.
Looking back over some of the wonderful highlights from 2012, the many varied people and locations all of which made the year a fun and creative experience.
The new Cambridge Biomedical Campus at Addenbrooks, Cambridge, UK. Gallery here Always pass this on my cycle ride to Cambridge, and love the way the light falls on the metal cladding. Looking forward to seeing it completed and all the fencing disappear.
Over the last twelve months the NHS National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) undertook a large photography project to update its library of clinical healthcare images for use across its nationwide network.
The NIHR commissioned me to work on this project which involved photoshoots at 8 locations across the UK. With more locations and photo shoots planned for the coming months ahead.
All the locations were operational clinics or surgeries within hospitals and general practice surgeries. All the models were consenting members of the public and staff. Photography was undertaken during the course of real consultations or examinations. Here are some of the results.
Spire Healthcare commissioned Alex to take photographs for a new image library. The photo shoot took place in Manchester, Leeds and Hull Hospitals on 3 consecutive days during October 2009. Resulting images are to be used across the Spire group for all corporate marketing and PR.

Lots of portraits taken over two days for the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital’s new nursing recruitment brochure. Great job, loads of fun meeting some very nice people. The brief was quite open with guidance to take approachable, happy portraits with neutral backgrounds. I chose to shoot with available light where possible and fill shadows evenly.
Alan Johnson MP talking to a patient at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust Hospital, London. The communications office at the Royal Brompton very kindly booked me to take photographs of Alan Johnson’s visit to the asthma clinic at the Royal Brompton Hospital in June 2009. The visit was well organised and many images were captured of staff and patients talking to the secretary of state.
